About Fred Chase
I began turning wood forms 10 years ago. Seeing big wooden chunks transformed into thin walled forms was exciting and challenging. And seeing the results constantly fed a hunger to create new forms. Prior to this endeavor, I had been creating 2 dimensional designs for 35 years. When Covid hit, I finally gave myself permission to explore a process of creating wood turned forms and applying my designs onto the surface of the wood. This has opened up many possibilities for artistic expression that integrates the craft of wood turning with the creative expression of unique and unexpected designs Plumbing these possibilities represents my current and future endeavor.
The medium I use for these surface designs over raw wood begins with penciling the design on the wood form, applying archival ink to set the design into the form, then using Prismacolor artist markers for most of the applications of color. I then seal the design with an acrylic spray for a more permanent protection.
