About Kari Lonning
All baskets are woven using a multi-element twining technique, some also include patches of color achieved by using a traditional tapestry technique. The hairy baskets are created by adding hundreds of 5-inch pieces into the basket as it is being woven. I use commercial textile dyes for color.
The colorful baskets are made with artist-dyed rattan reed. The brown, natural baskets are made from locally gathered akebia vines. All baskets, rattan and akebia, are sealed with encaustic medium to strengthen and protect from moisture damage.
