About Georgette Sanders
I am a potter and a basket weaver using traditional materials collected from the South Carolina forestry combined with found objects. Drawing on the long tradition of sweetgrass basketry which derives from West Africa, I attach reeds like bulrush, sweetgrass, and long leaf pine needles to wheel-thrown and hand-built stoneware. This rich tradition has been preserved in the Coastal Low Country by the Geechee Gullah people and, as a descendant, I’ve created one-of-a-kind art forms with the use of resources provided by nature.
